Satinay trees (Syncarpia hillii) have a small distribution of Fraser Island and the National Park of Cooloola just to the south. They grow up to 60 meters high and 4 meters in diameter. They are quite famous for their ability to resist Marine Borers which led to them being used in the Suez Canal Project and the reconstruction of the London Docks after World War Two. The green colour in leaves comes from chlorophyll which is unable to absorb light in the green part of the spectrum and as a result green is the colour we see. Chlorophyll is used by the plant to convert carbon dioxide, water and sunlight into energy through the process of photosynthesis. When chlorophyll is absent, the leaves change color based on the residual chemicals within them.
